Forward from Cookin'

"I’ve often wondered why so many musicians, and especially jazz musicians, are good cooks. And why they love to cook. But it wasn’t really until Jill was talking to me about this project that the answer sunk in.

Here’s the thing about food. To really Cook you have to have the right ingredients, the time and energy to make them come alive and the skill to do it. It’s a labour of love.

And here’s the thing about jazz, and especially big band jazz. To really Cook you have to have the right players and music, the time and energy to make them come alive and the skill to do it. And it’s definitely a labour of love. That’s especially the case with the Jill Townsend Big Band because it’s not a “dance band” but a large jazz ensemble dedicated to premiering new works by Canadian artists who are stretching in an exciting form.

And that’s why Cookin’ with the Jill Townsend Big Band is so hip.

For more than a year, Jill has been stirring 17 of Canada’s finest jazz musicians to produce their favorite recipes. It took a while. In fact, some of them were very reluctant to give up their best kitchen licks.

But, you know, Jill’s the boss. And as you’ll see, this band cooks on and off the stage – the trombone section alone can provide you with breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Jill has put together one great swinging big band, and now you can take part in their culinary expertise. And, while you’re at it, pop “Tales From the Sea” into your disc drive, get on some listening ears and get cookin’!"
